Situated at the foot of Daisetsuzan National Park in the center of Hokkaido, Higashikawa is a leading rice grower. The town also produces high-quality flowers and vegetables which usually grow in high altitude.

Delicious chiffon cake and bread are made from its rice. Miso paste and tofu made from fresh water are also very popular. " Michikusakan-Road Station ", the Tourist Information Center, sells a variety of these handcrafted products.

Approximately 30 percent of the nationally-famous Asahikawa Furniture is produced in this town.
Furthermore, artists such as wood craftsmen and potters have gathered in this town to establish studios and coffee shops.
